InterPrint includes two utility applications, LPR Send and LPR Monitor. Both of these utilities have been installed by the Installer into the InterPrint Extras folder on your hard drive. This chapter describes these utilities. For more information on InterPrint and its functions, see Chapter 2, Getting Started.
3.1 LPR Send
LPR Send is a drag-and-drop application that allows you to send a PostScript or text file directly to an LPR print queue without having to open the file in any other application.
◊ Because LPR Send transmits the file directly to the host, you do not need to have InterPrint selected in the Chooser as your current printer.
◊ LPR Send is System 7 dependent. It will not work under System 6.
3.1.1 Configuring LPR Send
Locate the LPR Send icon, shown below, in the InterPrint Extras folder on your hard disk.

To configure the LPR Send application:
1. Double click the LPR Send icon.
‚àö The LPR Send Preferences dialog, shown below, is displayed.

2. In the Queue field, type the official print queue for your printer.
◊ The print queue for your printer usually can be found in the /etc/printcap file on the server. Or ask your System Administrator for the official print queue.
3. In the Server field, type the name of the host that is acting as your print server.
◊ For a host to be used as a server, it must be running LPD or a functional equivalent that conforms to RFC1179, Berkeley's initial LPR implementation.
4. In the User Name field, type your user login for the server that you send files from.
5. In the Host Name field, type the name of the server that you send files from.
◊ The host name must be a valid IP address or host name that resolves to a valid IP address and must be recognized by the print server as a valid source of print requests.
6. Identify the type of printer by clicking either PostScript or Text.
◊ Ask your System Administrator whether your printer is a PostScript or text printer.
7. Check Banner Page if you want an introductory descriptive page to be printed along with your document. The contents of this page depend on the LPD (line printer daemon) being used.
8. Check Send Mail if you want to receive a mail message notifying you when your document has printed or if printing has failed.
◊ Mail will be sent to User Name at Host Name. For example, in the figure shown above, mail will be sent to kiki@intercon.com.
◊ For the Banner Pages and Send Mail options to work, they must be available on your server, and your System Administrator must have them turned on. Ask your System Administrator whether these options are available.
9. Check Use Icon Name if you want the application name (under the icon in the Finder) automatically placed in the Queue field.
‚àö Renaming the file changes the queue in the Queue field, as illustrated in the figures below.

◊ The Use Icon Name option is useful if you want to print to a different printer without going through the LPR Send Preferences dialog each time to edit the Queue field.
10. Click OK to save your preferences. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without saving your changes.)
11. Place the icon in a convenient location, such as on your desktop or in a special folder.
3.1.2 Configuring more than one Printer
It is useful to create an LPR Send file for each printer you print to.
To create another LPR Send icon:
1. Highlight an LPR Send icon.
2. Select Duplicate from the File menu.
‚àö A copy of the LPR Send icon appears.
3. Rename the icon to distinguish it from other LPR Send icons.
4. Configure the preferences in the LPR Send Preferences dialog as described in Section 3.1.1, Configuring LPR Send.
3.1.3 Using LPR Send
To use the LPR Send application:
1. Select the PostScript or text file you want to print.
2. Drag the file to the icon configured for your printer and drop it over the highlighted icon.
◊ You can select several files and drag them to the icon. LPR Send processes one file at a time.
‚àö The LPR Send Status dialog, shown below, is displayed, indicating the name of your file and the print queue it has been sent to. When the entire file is sent, the status dialog closes.

◊ For background printing to take effect, click anywhere outside the LPR Send Status dialog.
3. If you decide to abort a print job, click Cancel in the LPR Send Status dialog.
‚àö A system beep sounds, and the dialog, shown below, appears, acknowledging that the print job has been canceled.

◊ If you have selected several files to print, clicking Cancel cancels only the file that LPR Send is currently printing. LPR Send then begins printing the next file.
4. Click OK to close the LPR Send Cancel dialog.
3.2 LPR Monitor
LPR Monitor allows you to check or remove jobs waiting in any print queue configured in InterPrint.
3.2.1 Using LPR Monitor
To use LPR Monitor:
1. Locate the LPR Monitor icon, shown below, in the InterPrint Extras folder on your hard drive.

2. Double-click the LPR Monitor icon.
‚àö The LPR Monitor dialog opens, shown below.

◊ The contents of the LPR Monitor dialog depend on the LPD (line printer daemon) that is in use on your server.
3. Use the Queues pop-up menu at the top of the dialog to select the print queue you want to monitor. The pop-up contains all the queues you have configured in InterPrint.
4. Click the close box to close the dialog.
3.2.2 Making LPR Monitor an Apple Menu Item
You may find it convenient to access LPR Monitor through the Apple menu whenever you print using InterPrint or LPR Send.
◊ It is only possible to make LPR Monitor an Apple menu item when running System 7.
To make LPR Monitor an Apple menu item:
1. Select the LPR Monitor icon in the InterPrint Extras folder.
2. Select Make Alias from the File menu.
‚àö An alias of the LPR Monitor icon appears.
3. Drag the alias to the Apple Menu Items folder in your System Folder.
‚àö You can now select LPR Monitor from the Apple menu.
To remove the LPR Monitor item from the Apple menu:
1. Open the Apple Menu Items folder in your System Folder.
2. Drag the alias of the LPR Monitor icon to the Trash.
‚àö The LPR Monitor item is removed from the Apple menu. The original LPR Monitor file remains in the InterPrint Extras folder.
3.2.3 Removing a Print Job
To remove a print job from a queue:
1. Double-click the LPR Monitor icon.
Or
Select LPR Monitor from the Apple menu (see Section 3.2.2, Making LPR Monitor an Apple Menu Item).
‚àö The LPR Monitor dialog opens.
◊ The contents of the LPR Monitor dialog depend on the LPD that is in use on your server.
2. Select the appropriate queue.
3. Highlight the job you want to remove.
4. Click Remove.
‚àö The Remove dialog, shown below, is displayed, identifying the number of your job (this number appears as part of the job information in the LPR Monitor dialog).

5. Click OK to remove the job. (Or click Cancel to close the dialog without removing the job.)
‚àö You are returned to the LPR Monitor dialog.
6. Click the close box to close the LPR Monitor dialog.
